Sara “Sally” Lee Eckard, 79, of Hickory, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at her home. She was born on June 29, 1945, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Sally earned a Bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman University, a Master’s degree in languages from Vanderbilt University, and later in life, a Master’s degree in counseling from Lenoir-Rhyne University. She was an avid reader who loved classical music and attending concerts.
Sally was deeply civic-minded and devoted her time to advocating for the less fortunate in her community. She worked closely with the NAACP and was honored with the Spirit of King Award for her service. Known throughout the community for her sweet and kind soul, Sally never met a stranger.
She is survived by her son, David Eckard (Jennifer) of Hickory; daughter, Laura Eckard of Morganton; and two beloved granddaughters, Olivia Eckard and Becklee Eckard of Hickory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Campbell Lee and Thelma Bayless Lee.
The family will hold a small private gathering at a later date in her memory.
