Neal Eugene “Gene” McCorkle

November 16, 1943 — September 1, 2025

Neal Eugene “Gene” McCorkle, the youngest of three siblings, was born on November 16, 1943, to the late Herman McCorkle, Sr. and Minnie Moena Cornelius. To all who knew him, he was simply “Gene.” On September 1, 2025, Gene peacefully transitioned to Eternal Rest at Valley Nursing Center.

Gene was educated in Newton, NC, and graduated from Central High School. After graduation, he spent several years in New Jersey before returning home to Newton, NC.

In April 1968, Gene enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on February 25, 1970. His courage and sacrifice during this time remain a testament to his devotion to his country and his commitment to service.

Outside of his military service, Gene enjoyed a full and active life. He had a passion for golf, fishing, and listening to music, and he could always be found socializing with friends and family. Gene’s warm personality, easy smile, and love for conversation made him a joy to be around.

Gene was a faithful member of Saint Paul AME Church, where he also sang in the Men’s Choir. His voice and spirit brought comfort and joy to all who worshiped alongside him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Florence Foote McCorkle; and his siblings, JoAnn McCorkle and Herman McCorkle, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, LeuVornia Outerbridge; stepsons, Greg Foote and Michael Foote; along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren, extended family, and dear friends who will forever remember his love, laughter, and generosity of spirit.

The service will be held at St. Paul Methodist Church in Newton on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Visitation begins at 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Central Cemetery.
