Mildred Lee Skipper

April 26, 1928 — March 27, 2026

Mildred Lee “Polly” Shell Skipper passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026. She was born on April 26, 1928, in Hickory, North Carolina, to the late John Edgar Shell and Ammie Leola Hilton Shell. Polly was the youngest of fifteen children, a role that helped shape her spirited and joyful nature.

Polly was preceded in death by her husbands, William Lloyd Schrum, Sr of Lincolnton, North Carolina and W.G. “Skip” Skipper of Chesterfield, South Carolina.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: William L. Schrum Jr. (Mary) of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and Donna Schrum Camit of Irmo, South Carolina; her stepson, Barry Skipper (Melba) of Supply, North Carolina; and her cherished grandchildren: Bonnie Sandmeyer (Mark) of Portage, Michigan, Thomas “Barrett” Stine (Tera) of Hickory, North Carolina, Syed Camit of Columbia, South Carolina, Liiani Anders (Adam) of Columbia, South Carolina, Heather Fleisnner (Jack) of Hickory, North Carolina, Will Skipper of Cheraw, South Carolina, and Bryan Skipper (Jessica) of Supply, NC. She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren: Emma Sarratt; Ayla and Lana Anders; and Alyson, Baylen, Camryn, and Finlyn Skipper.

Polly discovered her passion for painting later in life after receiving art supplies as a Christmas gift in 1994. What began as a simple gift blossomed into a remarkable talent spanning acrylics, oils, and watercolors. Her work earned numerous awards and brought joy to many who were fortunate enough to own her pieces, each one a lasting reflection of her creativity and spirit.

Above all, Polly treasured her family. She embraced life with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure well into her later years—enjoying experiences such as whitewater rafting, ziplining, and even a hot air balloon ride. Her vibrant personality, love of storytelling, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A private ceremony will be held.
