Michael "Petey" Stephen Gray

Michael “Petey” Stephen Gray, 62, of Newton, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born December 22, 1963, he was the son of the late Wade Lewis Gray and Betty Gray.

Petey was a man of many passions and a wonderful spirit. He loved the thrill of a good pool game, the strategy of poker, and the excitement of baseball. Fishing brought him peace and joy, while NASCAR races fueled his love for the fast lane. He was known for his sharp wit, great sense of humor, and magnetic personality that drew people to him. Above all, Petey cherished his role as a devoted father, with the greatest joy of his life being the birth of his beloved son, Matthew.

He is survived by his son, Matthew Gray and his wife, Ashley; the mother of Matthew, Marcella Eckard; his brothers, Kevin Gray and his wife, Erica, and David Gray; his sister, Tamera Krzeminski; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Tony Gray; and his best friend, David Holden.

The family will have a private service at a later date.
