Mary Katherine Witherspoon Hass

March 7, 1940 — May 20, 2026

Mary Katherine Witherspoon Hass, age 86, of Startown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Abernethy Laurels. She was born on March 7, 1940, to the late Howard O. Witherspoon and Katherine Setzer Witherspoon.

She dedicated much of her professional life to education, serving as a Home Economics teacher for many years at Newton-Conover High School. She was admired for her talents as a seamstress, cook, and event planner. Her creative gifts extended to floral design, where she found great joy in working with plants and flowers.

Following her retirement, she continued to serve her community through volunteer work in the kitchen at The Corner Table, where she generously shared her skills with others. She was a lifelong and devoted member of First Methodist Church in Maiden, where she taught Sunday School and remained active in service for as long as her health allowed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian Hass, and his wife, Carla; and by her brothers, Odell Witherspoon and Marty Witherspoon.

She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 64 years, Kenneth Bruce Hass; her daughter, Beth Nolley (Frank) of Startown; her grandchildren, Mason Nolley and Payton Nolley; her sister, Nancy Witherspoon Childers of Durham, NC and her sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Witherspoon of Morganton, NC.

Mary Katherine will be remembered for her kindness, creativity, and devotion to her family, faith, and community. Her legacy of service and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

In accordance with her wishes, no formal services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to First Methodist Church, Maiden.
