Eva Marie Bowman Scronce of Newton, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. She was 89 years old. Born October 31, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Bowman and Eva Mauney
She was known to many as “Nanny Scronce,” and was faithful, fiercely loving, independent, stubborn, caring, and wonderfully honest. She was a woman of strong faith and never hesitated to show up for the people she loved. She was truly the anchor of her family.
Some of her family’s most treasured memories are sitting together for long conversations, watching ballgames, or simply enjoying each other’s company. There was comfort in her presence and peace in the familiarity of everyday moments spent with her.
Marie loved sports and enjoyed cheering for the Clemson Tigers, the Braves, and the Panthers, or simply watching whatever game happened to be on television. Sports brought her excitement and joy and reflected her lively spirit.
She also loved being outdoors. Gardening, mowing the grass, and spending time outside brought her happiness. One of the lasting images her family will always cherish is seeing her sitting peacefully in her porch rocking chair and watching the traffic pass by. She enjoyed life’s quiet moments.
Marie taught her family what it meant to be strong, to stand firm, to love deeply, to speak honestly, and to lean on faith through every season of life. Her strength, wisdom, and unwavering love shaped the lives of those around her and left an imprint that will never fade.
Although hearts are broken by her passing, her family finds peace in knowing she is no longer in pain. Her legacy lives on in every lesson she taught, and every memory she created. She will be loved always and carried forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Marie is survived by her son, Clifton Scronce (Kathy); two daughters, Elaine Lutz (Roger) and Pat Scronce (Albert Baynard); daughter in law, Sharron Scronce; sister, Thelma Smith; six grandchildren, Heather Coffey (Jesse), Chace Kahill (Michelle Lefeavers), Paige Papesh (Derek), Sara Lane (Morgan), Rachel Crawford (Liz), and Eric Scronce (Emily); seven great grandchildren, Brian, Norrie, Penelope, Mattie, Lois, Vivian, and Nate; and numerous extended family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Scronce; her son, Bradley Scronce; and eight siblings.
