Maria Elena Mijangos

Maria Elena Mijangos, 69, of Newton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born on Friday, February 24, 1956, in Guatemala, she was the daughter of the late Isidoro Reyes and the late Elsa Perez.

Maria had a deep love for her family and found great joy in cooking for them. She cherished animals, had a strong devotion to prayer, and enjoyed reading, singing, and listening to the Word of God.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 35 years, Rene Saul Mijangos; her daughter, Sara G. Orantes-Forero and husband David Forero; three sons, Jose A. Orantes and wife Martha Elizondo, Andres Mijangos, and Diego Mijangos; her sister, Sandra Gallardo; and her brothers, Carlos Reyes, Arnoldo Reyes, and Eddy Reyes. She was a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren: Derrick, Angelo, Rahel, Carolina, Jadai, Emma, and Elyja.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Jenkins Funeral Home, 4081 Startown Road, Newton, NC 28658. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery, 1570 Southwest Blvd, Newton, NC 28658.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the Celebration Center at Jenkins Funeral Home.

Maria Elena Mijangos, de 69 años, residente de Newton, falleció en paz el martes 13 de mayo de 2025 en el Catawba Valley Medical Center. Nació el viernes 24 de febrero de 1956 en Guatemala, hija del fallecido Isidoro Reyes y de la fallecida Elsa Pérez.

El servicio fúnebre se llevará a cabo el jueves 15 de mayo de 2025 a la 1:00 p.m. en Jenkins Funeral Home, 4081 Startown Road, Newton, NC 28658. El sepelio se realizará posteriormente en el cementerio Southside, 1570 Southwest Blvd, Newton, NC 28658.
