Larry Dean Johnson, 78, of Hickory passed away Wednesday, May 28th, 2025 at Frye Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Born August 13th, 1946, he was the son of the late Roy Clayton Johnson and Vegie McMahan.
A Vietnam War Veteran, he served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Infantry Division. He was proud of his service, although he still carried unhealed wounds.
He was formerly employed with K&M Tire Company and retired with more than 20 years of service. He loved his job and his employer and those he had the pleasure of working with.
Larry was a God fearing man who loved his family and loved his country. He was a hardworking, quiet, humble, kind and caring soul who enjoyed the simple things in life; working around his home, a good meal, casting a fishing line, but mostly spending time with the family and friends who meant so much to him. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers; A.B. Barnes, Chude Barnes, Donald Johnson, and James Johnson; sisters Vivian Shultz, and Betty Jo Lewis; and twin sister, Rebecca Johnson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 28 years, Peggy Diane Johnson; sons, Kenneth Johnson (Joy), and Johnny Johnson;
daughter, Brandi Deal (Scott); very special nephews, Jeffrey Johnson, Rodney Johnson, and Boyd Johnson; many special grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and a beloved dog, Ginger.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Jenkins Funeral Home in Newton, NC. A committal with military honors will immediately follow in the memorial garden. Pastor Freddy Lindsey will officiate.
