James Ray Howard

James Ray Howard, 92, of Newton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Carolina Caring. He was born September 30, 1933, in Greenville, South Carolina, to the late Andrew and Birdie Mae Howard.

James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was guided by faith and love for his family. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy and carried that sense of duty throughout his life. A man of remarkable drive and perseverance, James owned and operated his own insurance company for many years and continued working well into his 80s.

He found joy in tending his rose garden, caring for his yard, and keeping busy with countless projects. Family gatherings, especially Christmas celebrations, were among his most treasured moments. Known for his generosity and giving spirit, James’s love for his family was evident in all that he did.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sybil Ann Howard; two sons, David Howard and wife Lawander, and Tim Howard and wife Caren; four grandchildren, Megan Smith, Emily Howard, Michael Howard, and Sara Howard; and one great-grandson, Grayson Smith. In addition to his parents, Andrew and Birdie Mae Howard, he was preceded in death by other loved ones who welcomed him home.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Jenkins Funeral Home, 4081 Startown Road, Newton, NC 28658. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
