Helen Lail Smith

Helen Lail Smith, 77, of Valdese, passed away Monday, January 12, 2026, at UNC Health Blue Ridge. Born July 23, 1948, she was the daughter of the late James Leonard Lail and Mary Frazier Lail.

She is survived by her sisters, Libby Helms and husband Bobby of Lincolnton, and Genny Lail of Mountain View; her brothers, Bill Lail of Vale, Richard Lail and his wife Sharon of Vale, and Max Lail and his wife Kathy of Vale; and many loved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David C. Smith; her brothers, Thomas Lail and Johnny Lail; and her sister, Oleta Elmore.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the caregivers and friends at College Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care shown to their loved one.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Rachel M. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at New Home Church, located at 544 Moriah School Road, Casar, NC.
