Gilbert “Hook” Mashburn, 87, of Stanley, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, October 2, 2025.
Born May 21, 1938, he was the son of the late Zed and Grace Mashburn. Gilbert began his career as a brick mason, later worked as an electrician, and finished his working years in maintenance. After retiring, he became an avid gardener. He never did anything in small portions and loved sharing the abundance of his garden with family, friends, and neighbors. Known for always doing things the “hard way,” Gilbert brought dedication and heart to everything he touched.
He dearly loved his dog, Ringo, who was thoroughly spoiled, and he had a special love for children, earning the title of “Grandpa” to everyone’s kids.
Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Nellie Falkner Mashburn; his son, Kevin Gilbert Mashburn; his daughter, Pamela Grace Mashburn; his sisters, Gail Jones, Melanie Bishop, Betty Goodson, and Jennie Jenkins; and special friend, Ricky House and family. He is also remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Marie Mashburn; his parents; four brothers; and two sisters.
