David Burl Mize

David “Dave” Burl Mize, of Conover, passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 75. He was born on September 19, 1950, in McArthur, West Virginia, to the late William Burl Mize and Annie Lee Lilly.

David proudly served his country in the United States Armed Forces as a Sergeant during the Vietnam War. For his honorable service, he was awarded the Bronze Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. After serving in the military, David continued his dedication and hard work as a truck driver, AKA “Hawk”. Although he found fulfillment in his trucking career, he was equally devoted to caring for his dogs and cat, and he remained committed to supporting others.

He belonged to AM Vets and the American Legion in Hickory, North Carolina, where he cherished connecting with fellow veterans and friends. He found fulfillment serving in the Honor Guard, helping ensure that veterans were given their final salute in recognition of their service to the nation.

He is survived by his daughter, Charlene Shatley, and her husband Billy; his grandchildren, Evan and wife Morgan, Matthew and girlfriend Sophie, and Makenzi Stillwell; his great-grandson, Coleson Shatley; as well as his stepchildren, Mike Hartley and Lynne Edwards.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home Celebration Center, 4081 Startown Road, Newton, NC 28658. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Veterans.
