Dr. George Joyce

Dr. George William (Bill) Joyce passed away on August 22, 2026 at the age of 92. He practiced internal medicine in High Point for well over 30 years, beloved by his patients and respected by his colleagues.

He began his career by joining Dr. William Flythe at High Point Internal Medicine. The practice changed names throughout the years, but Dr. Joyce was the constant, serving alongside Drs. Gordon Arnold, Lyle Smith, and Grady Stone. He was involved for years in the care of dialysis patients. He also served as Chief of Staff at High Point Memorial Hospital, as it was called at the time.

Dr. Joyce received his undergraduate degree from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. He continued his studies at Bowman Grey School of Medicine at Wake Forest University where he received his medical degree. He was a life-long supporter and avid fan of the Demon Deacons.

He was married to Sarah Murray Joyce, whom he met when she was still in high school, for 63 years. They enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and playing bridge together. The two of them shared a love of choral music as well. When Sarah served as organist at various area churches, Bill sang in the choir. He had a beautiful baritone voice and often sang solos in church. The Joyces also sang in the High Point Community Chorus.

Bill is survived by his children, Ann Joyce Reed (Clive) and Tim Joyce (Sheila); his grandchildren, Will Joyce, Alice Joyce, and Ian Reed; and a niece and a nephew, Sharon Murray and Stewart Murray. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Ethel Joyce; his wife, Sarah; his brothers-in-law and their wives, Orville Murray (Lamar) and Ken Murray (Jane); and his niece, Denise Smith.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Air Force, honorably discharged with the rank of captain.

These comments from two of his former colleagues sum up his life of service better than any obituary can. “Dr. Joyce was a true southern gentleman who cared deeply for his patients and was always so kind and patient to all the staff.” “I was his office nurse for more than 10 years, and I never heard a cross word from him.”
